URBAN DESIGN STUDIO
This advanced, senior level, studio focuses on the design of buildings and places in an urban setting that require an intense concentration of support systems. The course exploration and study of architectural design, technology and planning principles is designed to bridge the gap between architectural theory and practice through the design of structures and places for human use and inspiration.
By the end of the course, the student will be able to do the following:
1. Analyze site context variables and user requirements in the preparation of a site analysis and performance program.
2. Evaluate site and program information in the development of master plans and building designs in an urban environment.
3. Utilize three-dimensional computer modeling and animation to compare design alternatives and progress through schematic design and design
development phases of a design project.
4. Evaluate a variety of civil, structural and mechanical components and systems for integration into a building design.
5. Defend a design concept and project proposal through multimedia architectural presentations.

Architecture vs Non-Architecture
This introductory project was designed to help students develop their own working definitions of Architecture and Non-Architecture in relation to the built environment and express those definitions in graphic form. In doing so, they explored their bias toward the following questions; What is (and is not) Architecture? What is the difference between Architecture, architecture and building? What is the role of the architect in society? Should architects strive for beauty in their work? What is (and is not) beautiful?
Students were charged with finding a structure from a local neighborhood that they discerned to be "non architecture" and prepare a schematic design proposal with Architectural characteristics. The final proposal should enhance and revitalize the neighborhood. Select Student Sample:

Master Plan Project: Pack Neighborhood
This project focused on the PACK Historic District in the southern Marketview Heights neighborhood of Rochester, NY and was undertaken in partnership with the City of Rochester Planning Department. students working in eight teams with four or five students per group met with city officials, completed a site analysis, and conducted a mini-charrette in the classroom to generate ideas for the revitalization of the neighborhood.
An interim critique at Rochester City Hall gave the students the opportunity to solicit feedback from neighborhood residents, city planners and local design professionals. The final master plan proposals investigated potential development along the North Union Street and East Main Street corridors, the residential and industrial districts and other major nodes including the North Union – East Main intersection, the lumber yard, the North Union Street underpass and the railroad right-of-way. The Claude F. Bragdon Graduate School of Architecture 2009
A Living-Learning Community
The design program for this independent project required the development of a site to accommodate a school of architecture and a 48-unit student housing complex, a parking area and green space for use by college students, faculty, staff and the community. The building design proposal was to be visually compatible (in context or contrast) to Downtown Rochester and the adjacent PACK neighborhood. Student Samples:

Wellsville, New York Veteran's Village Mixed Use Urban Infill 2008
The Veteran's Village Project included a broad master plan for the City of Wellsville to support returning veterans. The intent was to creat a welcoming, inclusive community housing opportunity close to the heart of the village and support services. Students worked on a wide variety of projects that included a mixed use infill project in the heart of Wellsville that offerred medical services on the pedestrian level and apartments on the upper floors. A vacant lot in Wellsville served as the proposed location. Student projects were given to the Veteran's Village for their use in planning and fundraising.
